6 cups of sugar seems excessive for 9-12 servings

I was really excited to try this recipe until i saw that it calls for up to 6.25 cups of sugar. Is that really an acceptable amount in an 8x8 cake?

The recipe for the cake portion is calling for different types of sugar, 1 cup regular white and 3/4 of brown sugar. The frosting calls for 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 cups of confectioner's or powdered sugar. Powdered sugar is a mixture of finely ground sugar and cornstarch. I suppose for some people that may seem excessive. You could of course reduce the total amount in the cake itself, or even use some sort of substitute if you felt that strongly about it.

Gosh, I think "acceptable" is probably relative. The cake itself calls for 1 3/4 cup sugar and the frosting recipe make A LOT of frosting, so you could do one of two things - make the cake but don't frost it or use the smaller amount of sugar called for in the frosting recipe, and only use half the frosting to frost the cake - save the rest for another day (it freezes beautifully). hope this helps.
