Small pot/dish - wondering what it is used for

I was gifted this small dish several years ago and recently came across while moving. I can't remember what it is used for and the person who gifted can't either. (aka mym mom) Would love any insight as I was not able to find anything via a quick internet search. Thanks in advance!
