Old Fashioned Caramel Icing using melted sugar in a skillet.

There was a lady in Jackson, MS that made the best caramel cakes. I lost the cookbook that contained the recipe, but it started by browning sugar in a skillet & it called for evaporated milk & butter, but no candy thermometer was used. It didn't take long to cook, but I just can't remember the recipe. Can anyone out there help? Please?? I want to make this cake for my dad. Thanks to all!

I have never made caramel icing, but it sounds so good that I was tempted to google your query a bit. So many recipes out there for caramel icing, but this was the first one I saw that mentioned caramelizing the sugar first as you said. And while it calls for half & half, the notes do mention you can substitute evaporated milk... Let us know if you make this (or find the original)!
