Need a pie crust intervention

Help. I just made pecan pie for dinner today. I can’t do anything about this one, but what did I do wrong? The butter leaked out all over the oven and the crust is more of a cracker.

This is probably the best reason always to have ice cream on hand when serving pie. Put enough ice cream on any dessert with issues and no one will ever notice. In my case, I would probably serve the ice cream topped with just the filling (but I'd ask anyone if they would prefer to have some of the failed crust added as well, which no doubt someone would). ;o)

Actually, there were two other pies there, and it turns out that the only person in the family who really loves pecan pie is my daughter in law's mother. She ate a big piece, and my husband and I tasted it. We've over the years cut a lot of sugar from our diets and we both found the pie to be way too sweet (in addition to the crust being a disaster). I think I’m done with pies. I realize that I don’t like pie all that much so I never really practice making it. Cake and cookies on the other hand…..

Texture ok for serving?

Probably not. It’s so cracker-like that I think it will be hard to cut. But I’m sure the filling will taste good, and the family is accustomed to my less than perfect pie crusts, so we'll soldier on. Based on what I’ve read, I think the dough was under- mixed and under hydrated. (The last pie crust I made was too ugh, so I think I veered too far in the opposite direction.) I think the only solution is for me to practice making pies. Sigh.

That’s tough, not too ugh, although it was that, too.

Tolerant family - good.
Dry crust - less so.
Some serve-with ideas to add moisture:
• dairy - whipped or ice cream, yogurt or sour cream;
• fruits - juicy ones like pears or fruit compote;
• liquids for dipping like cookies - coffee, tea, milk, brandy, sweet wine.

Thanks, Nancy. There will be so many desserts....I think everyone will just eat the filling.
