Hi Karen! We love this shatter-proof and dishwasher-safe dinnerware: mhttps://food52.com/shop/products/4884-sandia-melamine-dinnerware-set-of-6. You might also like these: https://food52.com/shop/products/5745-melamine-paper-plates. Either could be a great option for you :)
Thank you for the suggestions - unfortunately they need to be able to go in a microwave and melamine cannot be used that way. If you have any other ideas please let me know.
My set dates from the Nineties when the company was still part of Corning Glass Works. I believe the set is intact and I've dropped several pieces onto a tile kitchen floor and concrete patio without breakage.
Corelle is very, very durable but not completely unbreakable. That said, it is so inexpensive that replacing a piece isn't a hardship.
Many of my Corelle pieces are used more for food prep (mise en place) these days than as dishes for eating. For that reason I have never gotten rid of them: they are too useful and I am not afraid of using them as kitchen tools. I'm glad I kept them around!
I don't know if they come in white- but Amazon handles a set of dishes made from wheat straw that might fit the bill. My daughter bought a set of coffee mugs made of the same material to use at work in a preschool, and they work like a charm. Microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and of course, so far unbreakable. And that's saying a lot in a preschool setting. Hers has hit a concrete floor and come through without a scratch or dent. Otherwise, it's tough. Melamine is fairly unbreakable, but not microwave safe. The only other option would be plain old white Corelle - which is highly break resistant, but not unbreakable.

It is still reasonably priced.
