What is an alternative frosting to American buttercream for soft cookies?

I just dislike the flavor. I love those Cheryl's cookies frosting though! The batch I made yesterday look picture perfect bur neither my husband or I care for them. Russian buttercream or a cream cheese buttercream? What is best for cookies?

Try an ermine or boiled milk frosting.

I don't know what ingredients are in the cookies, but I might leave them unfrosted, but sprinkle some cinnamon sugar, perhaps spiked with a touch of freshly grated nutmeg or just a whisper of cardamom, before baking. ;o)

There are a ton of frosted cookies n the site, I’d scroll through and see what appeals. Personally I’d gravitate towards a simple powdered sugar and lemon drizzle because lemon makes everything better!

Yes!
And/or think back to cookies you've liked. What was the frosting on them?

To clarify, I am looking at frosting that will hold up on a cookie and is not too sweet. A cream cheese frosting would be lovely but then I have to refrigerate it... So something less sweet and can remain out of the refrigerator.

Dolly - maybe have a look at this article from Wilton, about several different types of cookie icing and how to store them.
