This question has been repeatedly asked over the years and the author has never bothered to clarify the matter.

I would use unsweetened coconut. The recipe already has one cup of sugar and most American dessert recipes are too sweet for my personal tastes.

If it's not sweet enough for you, you can always add extra sugar to the whipped cream and/or serve with ice cream. If it's cloying sweet, there's little that can be done.

I'd lean toward making the dessert less sweet however I know I am in the minority of American cooks.

Best of luck.

Thanks 702551! Those are my thoughts too! I detest overly sweet desserts! I'm thinking of doing 1/2 whipped cream & 1/2 creme fraiche for the topping--or 1/2 goat & 1/2 greek yogurt to counter and balance the sweet. Fingers crossed Trader Joe's has their unsweetened coconut! I'll post my results--also using the monk fruit stuff. Not crazy about it but w high A1C and love to bake about the best compromise I can think of.
