Are the mushrooms added whole, sliced or chopped?

The photo does not show whole mushrooms, but the recipe only give the amount of mushrooms but does not indicate if they are added whole, sliced or diced. ???

The original Artusi recipe (ricetta nr. 122) instruct to cut the mushrooms into thin slices.
