Is it a good cake to make ahead or just the day before?

How far in advance would you recommend making this cake; as in how far in advance could I make just the cake portion and how long does it keep after assembly?

It sounds like a great cake and I'd like to make it for a friend's birthday as well. I realize the fresh raspberries are limiting to the longevity.
Is it possible to include a cross sectional picture? It is always helpful to see how the cake stacks up!

You could make the cake a day in advance. Let it cool and cover it. I’d make and assemble the rest the next day.
