Too Many Cooks: Your Favorite Provisions Product

August  1, 2014

You'll be hearing from the staff at FOOD52 in Too Many Cooks, our group column in which we pool our answers to questions about food, cooking, life, and more.

Berry Bowl on Provisions

We admit it: We all wish our homes -- and our lives in general, really -- looked like a Provisions collection. Who hasn’t dreamed of a having a place filled with berry bowls, seersucker tablecloths, hand carved wooden salad servers, and delectable chocolate bars? We’d never want to leave.

Shop the Story

Though we may never reach such perfect heights, we’ve found that certain Provisions products have improved our lives immensely. In honor of Provisions' first birthday, we asked the Food52 team:

What is your favorite Provisions product?

Does the coffee cold brewer get you out of bed in the morning, or is the spherical hanging basket adding organization to your life? Tell us in the comments!

Sarah: For my birthday this year, I received the Green Enamel Milk Pot from my best friend. Suddenly, my life made sense: I understood what I had been missing for my first twenty-two years, and the world around me came into sharp focus.

Lucy: Clam Lab's Wheel-Thrown Serving/Pasta Bowl. If you've ever held it in your hands, you understand. Also, it's the best size for A LOT OF PASTA.

More: Practice your pasta-cooking skills so you can fill up your pasta bowl.

Will: I love my Therm-o Terra Water Bottle, and the Cultivate Candles are awesome. The cotton scent makes my apartment feel like a real home...almost.

Lauren K.: I am rather obsessed with three things: My Rotelle Pasta Necklace, which is just the right amount of great design and ridiculousness; my Individual Casserole Dishes from Pillivuyt, because they are so classic and just the right size; and Jacobsen Salt (I keep myself stocked, and I always have a bag or two on hand to give as a gift).

More: Get familiar with 10 salts you should know.

Catherine: I'm a huge, huge fan of the Glass Straws. They make drinking water seem fancy, which encourages me to stay hydrated.

Christina: How does one pick a favorite child? Truly I can't. But I can say I love when a product surprises me and I find that I use it in ways I didn't anticipate. For example, I use these Outdoor Net Food Covers to keep the birds away from my treasured rooftop tomatoes (the weights in the corner keep them from blowing away).

Depending on my mood, I put N. 37 Izak or Persian Lime Curry Rub on everything. Grilled zucchini, roasted squash, fresh ricotta, eggs -- everything.

I hate when good bread goes stale before I can make enough tomato sandwiches. Bee's Wrap solves that problem, and I also use the wrap to cover all my leftovers or prep bowls in lieu of plastic wrap or foil.

The 52 Stripes Tea Towel provides a great story, and it's both super useful and just downright pretty. This gem lines bread baskets, hangs in my kitchen, and wraps wine bottles for gifts.

Danny: The Elevated Laundry Basket is far and away the single most important aspect of my home. As far as function goes, its perfect. As a single male in an NYC apartment, it is the only thing that keeps my room from not appearing like a natural disaster just hit. Plus, I can just wheel my 25 pound load of laundry to the laundromat downstairs.

Marian: My ceramic butter keeper, because I'm so fancy.

More: Find out all about butter.

Michael: I'm a big fan of these little 5-ounce cups, which are great for drinking wine, serving cocktails "up," and -- I'm ashamed to admit -- splitting a beer.

Kenzi: I use the Fresh Soil-Dipped Wooden Spoons and the Flour Sack Towels every single day, and I believe my life is better for it.

Flavor King Pluots

Bryce: Oh man. This really isn’t a fair question. I might have to go top 10, which I think I am allowed to do considering that I love everything in our shop:

10. Flavor King Pluots (and their cousin, the Flavor Heart Pluots) are, hands down, the best I’ve ever had.
9. Our French Rolling Pin: It’s so beautiful and will definitely be an heirloom.
8. I get so many compliments on my PieBox when I bring pies around to dinner parties.
7. Our gorgeous 52 Stripes Tea Towel: Beautiful and functional (if only I would let anyone else touch it).
6. I want this Forged Iron Fry Pan. Actually, I want three of them.
5. These ice cream bowls are my favorite.
4. It’s a tie between the Yerba Buena Serving Bowl, and the Muybridge Bowl. (I loved them so much I got them both.)
3. I also covet a set of these copper cups
2. Our lobster tees are amazing.
1. And finally, these birthday candles make me pretty happy.

I put chocolate chips in 95% of the things I make and am a strong proponent for lunch dessert.

Your Pillivuyt custard/condiment kettles. I'm getting several sets this fall to include with the 4-ounce jars of chutney, of various kinds, that I've made and the dried-fruit conserves and mostardas I will be making, to give in December to the extra-special people in my life. Included will be instructions to serve the condiments with cheese. I can't imagine a nicer way to present them with a cheese board. Not to mention those little kettles are just so darn cute! ;o) P.S. My mother owned so many things made by Pillivuyt, which she adored, but she never had any of these. I know she's smiling now, wherever she is.
