Let Everyone Eat Cake!

June 26, 2015

Today, on the anniversary of two other successful same sex- and marriage-equality court rulings, we're celebrating the Supreme Court's decision to make same-sex marriage legal in the United States—all 50 of them!

And what better way to celebrate—especially to celebrate marriage—than eat cake? Today, we're eating wedding cake (seriously—we've got a lot left over from our registry launch party), but we think that any kind of cake can be celebratory. Throw together a toast and make one of these 10 cake recipes:

Mahalo To Kristin and FOOD52. Got my apron on and heading to my pantry. Love is in the air!

For those of you interested in the purple cake, we hear you! Sadly, that photo was for a fondant kit from a maker who has since gone out of business: https://food52.com/shop/products/249-mauvelous-diy-fondant-cake-kit

But there is a fondant-style icing in this Black & White Cookie recipe that you might be able to play with https://food52.com/blog/9818-mini-black-and-white-cookies (or just stick with one of the festive cake recipes above).

Bill M. June 29, 2015
That was a beautiful cake, and Food52 is a beautiful company. Sorry we won't be able to make it. Maybe someone will come up with something just as beautiful.

Donna M. June 29, 2015
The cake is beautiful and has inpired me. I'm making an Earl Grey cake with lavender buttercream for dessert for this 4th of July. The celebrating continues. Thank you Kristen.

Dave G. June 28, 2015
Thanks for posting this. Everyone should be able to eat cake. I'm just going to gloss over the haters here. When I see an overly religious-themed cake, I don't go on a hateful tirade about how inappropriate it is, I just go to the next recipe. Like marriage, you can choose what cake you want to make and eat, nobody is forcing you. Again, thanks! <3

Caroline, could you please. find. the. purple. iced. cake recipe??
Looks yummy.
Yeah, and pretty too!
Thank you.

Amen Christiana T. very well put!! This is the last email I will read from Food 52, and now ashamed I recommended on Facebook.

Donna M. June 29, 2015
Because there is support here for what is now the law of the land, you refuse to bake another cake, or explore new recipes with a community that loves to cook? You'd have to retreat into a very small world if you refuse to socialize with people, shop from businesses, or visit websites that don't have all your political, philisophical, religious or moral beliefs. I hope you stay, but if you hate us all so much for supporting the ruling for equality then we wish you well.

Christina T. June 28, 2015
Your hearts may be full Food52, but for many of us who do not condone same-sex "marriage", our hearts are empty. Supporting the, at last count, 4%-8% of the population who considers themselves LBGT, and trampling on the rights of the voters of those states who had voted against same-sex "marriage" in their state is appalling. I couldn't agree more with Justice Scalia's dissent, “Today’s decree says that my Ruler, and the Ruler of 320 million Americans coast-to-coast, is a majority of the nine lawyers on the Supreme Court,” he writes. "This practice of constitutional revision by an unelected committee of nine, always accompanied (as it is today) by extravagant praise of liberty, robs the People of the most important liberty they asserted in the Declaration of Independence and won in the Revolution of 1776: the freedom to govern themselves.” Bring it on those of you who complain this is a food site, not a political one - Food52 opened the door for this discussion like it or not.

tamater S. June 28, 2015
If you're against same sex marriages, don't marry someone of your own sex. No one's trying to make YOU marry your own sex, so stop trying to tell other people what they can and can not do. Sinclair spoke of people like you: "When facism comes to America, it will be carrying a cross and draped in a flag." He was speaking about you.

Bill M. June 29, 2015
Honey you heart was empty way before SCOTUS!

Bill M. June 29, 2015
I can guarantee you this sh*t ain't happening of follower of the word of God. I don't see any legislation on the desks of Congress to make this law.

How many verses in the Bible are against Divorce yet NO ONE has that before the vote of the people.

So be off with thyself and love thyself with a great big piece of CAKE!

Deuteronomy 22:13-21New International Version (NIV)

Marriage Violations
13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.

20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.

Mike V. June 29, 2015
And many of us don't care what you think.
Calm down. If you're so worried about marriage, get to work trying to get no fault divorce and adultery outlawed.
Also, this is a LEGAL issue, not a religious one. The state hands out marriage licenses.

This has been falsely attributed to Sinclair Lewis.
From Wikiquote:
Misattributed To Sinclair Lewis:
When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. Many variants of this exist, but the earliest known incident of such a comment appears to be a partial quote from James Waterman Wise, Jr., reported in a 1936 issue of The Christian Century that in a recent address here before the liberal John Reed club said that Hearst and Coughlin are the two chief exponents of fascism in America. If fascism comes, he added, it will not be identified with any "shirt" movement, nor with an "insignia," but it will probably be "wrapped up in the American flag and heralded as a plea for liberty and preservation of the constitution."
Another early quote is that of Halford E. Luccock, in Keeping Life Out of Confusion (1938): When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled "made in Germany"; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, "Americanism." Harrison Evans Salisbury in 1971 remarked about Lewis: "Sinclair Lewis aptly predicted in It Can't Happen Here that if fascism came to America it would come wrapped in the flag and whistling 'The Star Spangled Banner.'"

2.Jump up ↑ p. 29, The Many Americas Shall Be One, Harrison Evans Salisbury. Published by W. W. Norton, 1971.
Now that you know, I do hope you will stop attributing this false quote to Sinclair Lewis, eh?

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015
Once again you are using Old Testament verses made for Old Testament Jews. New Testament Believers, that is, those who adhere to the New Covenant, are not, in any way, obligated to follow those laws.

tamater S. July 2, 2015
maybe ;-)

rockribbedrushy July 2, 2015
Really? Show me where dude.

Bill M. July 2, 2015
Your anti gay rhetoric is in the OLD TESTAMENT. You are cherry picking what you will and will not follow. The New Testament says noting about homosexuality. UGH!

rockribbedrushy July 2, 2015
New Testament Believers are under no obligation to follow Old Testament dietary or other laws.
Christ did indeed talk about adultery, sexual immorality and fornication in Matthew 15 and 19. These described any relationships that were outside the marriage as ordained by God.
Christ then defines in Matthew 19:4-6 what is permitted in God's marriage:
"Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate "
By defining marriage as between a man and a woman, He effectively condemned all other arrangements.
He clearly showed what God intended for marriage. There was no need to list all sexual immoralities because someone would say that Christ did not name mine and therefore it is alright for me to go on sinning.
Jesus already came to earth to preach Eternal Salvation. When he comes back a second time it will be to gather His Believers. None can come to the Father except through His Son Jesus Christ. It is also said in Acts 2-38:
"And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized, each one of you on the name of Jesus Christ to remission of sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Will You?

Bill M. July 2, 2015
Then why are there no laws denying divorce? I don't see anyone worrying about the wrath of God every time someone divorced. No flood no tornados. LOL Stop! Cherry Pickin' is awesome! And every preacher out there condemns me from the Old Testament. Again - Cherry Pickin'. And the Cherries you pick don't make the best pies. LOL In short the Bible was written by a bunch of guys who didn't even know where the sun went at night, let alone how to accurate cook pork or shrimp. Let's not even begin to talk about science, which didn't exists then, let alone subatomic particles. Despite scientific proof, you still believe the earth is 10K years old and Dinosaurs walked around with humans. LOL The New Testament was written 100+ years after the alleged events - and it's hearsay. There is no scientific evidence that Jesus ever existed. None whatsoever. So you can call this one of the darkest days in history and say that God is going to punish this country over gay marriage, yet he seemed to have sat on his hands over the 100 plus years where blacks were kept basically as pets. Nothing happened then. No wrath of God came down and did much of anything. So by all means - believe in what you want to believe. I'll stick with String Theories and Quantum Mechanics and when my boyfriend asks me to marry him I'm going to say yes. And we are going to eat cake.

rockribbedrushy July 2, 2015
"And we are going to eat cake. "

Yes, go and eat cake while homosexuals are being executed and thrown from buildings in muslim countries. Yes, go and eat cake while women are stoned to death and girls ate genitally mutilated and Christian pastors are imprisoned in muslim countries.
Enjoy the fact that you can bully and force Christians to bake your wedding, birthday and cupcakes for you while you could not be seen in public in any muslim country.
All Christians do here is follow the Words of Christ and tell you about sin and Eternal Salvation.
Any punishment is up to God:
Romans 12:19
"not avenging yourselves, beloved, but giving place to wrath, for it has been written, “Vengeance is Mine,” “I will repay,” says the Lord."

I don't pick and choose, dear boy, I just tell you what God has said.

So, yes, enjoy your cake.

PS God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, He will do so again.

Bill M. July 2, 2015
I have no say on what is happening in the Middle East so stop with that. Just like they have no say on our laws.

Remember when Christians burned women for being witches. Thousands of women were burned at the stake. Oh no, let's not talk bout how Christian intentionally gave Native American blankets infected with Small Pox. Pilgrims were awesome. We won't talk about the genocide committed on this land as Christians following God's Word raped and murdered anyone who got in their way as they took more and more land and called it the United States.

We were the illegal immigrants. But when children flee their country or be killed - SHUT DOWN THE BORDERS. THEY DON'T BELONE HERE!!!!!

God's love abounds in your history and in your benevolent oppression of anyone who isn't straight, white and Christian.

Why didn't God destroy the South for hunting down black people in their native country, capturing them like animals and bringing them to America and forcing them to be slaves. Beating them and murdering them if they didn't comply.

So God will burn us for gay Marriage but he's all good with slavery, torture and war.

Really?

Stop.

I will enjoy my cake.

Religion has caused most of the wars and violence in history.

You had your chance to run the world, it was called the Dark Ages.

We won't let you do it again.

And I'm man enough to show my face. You are a coward to hide behind your blank profile.

rockribbedrushy July 2, 2015
So much anger and so much falsehood.

There were no women burned at the stake in this country by anyone. Prove it.

Anyone that was burned at the stake in Europe or elsewhere were Christian martyrs burned by the Catholics, Anglicans and Lutherans.
Religion is not Christianity. Religion is about rules and regulations.
Christianity is about God and a relationship with His Son Jesus Christ. You would know that if you ever read Scripture.
And please stop quoting Leviticus or Deuteronomy, those laws are not relevant to New Testament Believers.
By the way, blacks and muslims in Africa sold slaves to the Europeans before there ever was a South.
And God did not allow the South to win, so there is your punishment.

Christ accepts all those who repent of their sins and accept Him as their Lord and Saviour.

And as far as you being persecuted, it seems to me that you are a 'happy' man.
Please go here and see who is persecuted and by whom:
http://www.persecution.com/
http://www.opendoorsusa.com/

PPS If I thought you would be reasonable, I would happily show my picture, but it is not me that you are angry with, but God Himself.

I had nothing to do with slavery, the inquisition or any of the atheists that committed murders or mayhem in history.

Bill M. July 2, 2015
http://www.history.com/news/ask-history/were-witches-burned-at-the-stake-during-the-salem-witch-trials

Ok they were hung for being witches.

And I will vote my will until all religion is put back where it belongs - in the freedom of your home and your church. You may voice it where you want and I will voice my atheism and sarcasm where I want. But I will not allow your religion to run this country anymore.

I've watch God Loves Uganda - I know enough about the evils of religion.

rockribbedrushy July 2, 2015
Again, you are confusing Christianity with 'religion'. They are not the same. You would know that if you read Scripture, such as John or Acts, but you are too stubborn or pigheaded to do so.
Christ told us in Matthew to go out into the world and spread His Word.
Christ did not teach 'religion', but Eternal Salvation.
I will leave you with several verses: Acts 9:1-5.
I'll pray for you.

Bill M. July 2, 2015
Please pray for the persecuted Christians in the Middle East who your God is allowing to be burned and beheaded. I mean really - they devote their lives to worshipping him and he allows this?

Here's the definition of religion.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/religion
Sorry - it kind of fits Christianity.

I'm gonna hang out with the sinners. We're gonna eat cake. :)

Food 52 is an apolitical food site/blog that choose to make a positive congratulatory statement on a historic event. Those of you that disagree with the congratulations need to take your argument to appropriate venues and simply leave the site to express your disagreement. If I come across a right wing or a fundamental blog I don't feel compelled to add my 2 cents as if it would matter. I respect the rights of those making statements I disagree with and have no desire to offend. This forum is not the place to state controversial opinions and create offense. The majority of the public supported the ruling. Argue your ongoing case elsewhere and leave us to celebrate our historic victory.

Elissa F. June 27, 2015
Unfortunately the Friday Roberts decision described the majority opinion as an affront to the rule of law & Constitutional self-government. The Thursday Roberts changed language to give SCOTUS & the government powers it does not have. SCOTUS should run for congress if they would rather write the law rather than interpret it.

Donna M. June 27, 2015
It's DONE! OVER! We are celebrating with cake. Your grumbling here, to the wrong crowd, serves no purpose other than showing us your poor form.

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015
Celebrate with cake? While homosexuals are being executed in muslim countries and Obama is cozying up to those countries?
Yes, please enjoy your cake while you can or until sharia law comes to the US.

Mike V. July 2, 2015
Sharia law! LOL!
You guys are hilarious.

Elissa F. June 27, 2015
What happened to keeping government out of my bedroom & marriage? Roberts gave the gov't. the key. There are 320 million Americans and only 1.8% are gay men. 9 unelected lawyers do not have the power to amend or change the Constitution. Everyone gets equal (not special) treatment under the law. The government must not order other religions how to conduct themselves. Wonder how well Food 52 will do when agenda driven people like Michelle Obama shut this site down for all your artery clogging, meat centric recipes? Food 52 should recognize we live in a republic founded on Judeo-Christian principles. Those principles have a manuscript given to us by God-called the Bible. Food 52 has always provided foods from many cultures without an agenda. While you celebrate the SCOTUS ruling yesterday ISIS is rampaging throughout the Middle-East, and Europe murdering& crucifying Christians and throwing Gay men off tall buildings. Yesterday ISIS went to a resort in Tunisia and slaughtered people on the beach. President Obama has done nothing to protect us and the world from Islamic-Jihad with his,"Let them eat cake attitude."

Chocolate B. June 27, 2015
FYI: Roberts wrote the dissenting opinion.

Can we return to cake now, leave religion out of it? Except maybe cake worship….

Scott B. June 27, 2015
First - take a Xanax. Second as Chocolate Be stated it was Roberts who dissented. Third, nothing they did amended the Constitution. The majority cited the Constitution in their decision.

MegK July 1, 2015
The court has not told any religion what to do. It still preserves the right of ANY religion or religious establishment to refuse to perform a ceremony. Just as a Catholic church is protected if they refused to perform a Jewish wedding. It is a legal matter, cut-and-dry. It mandates that municipalities/states issue marriage licenses, it has zero impact on any religion. You are right to lament that there are other regions of the world where human rights are not observed and unjustified hatred for other humans is rampant. But as many Americans and Food52 celebrated taking a huge civilized step forward to protect the rights of all Americans, you simply bolster the unrooted hatred that these regions demonstrate. Don't eat the cake if you don't think it looks good, but who wouldn't want cake?

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015
You are simply being foolish if you think that 'marriage equality' proponents are going to stop with this ruling. Making churches participate against their faith is next. Someone tweeted that religious freedom, First Amendment, is next to be eliminated.

Lauren W. June 27, 2015
Here's the thing: this is a legal issue. We live in a democracy, and in this democracy, religious belief is irrelevant when it comes to our laws. Separation of church and state. If you are unhappy with the laws and policies your government enacts and follows, by all means, engage in the political process as many of us do, by voting and supporting candidates that best represent us, working on campaigns, and writing our legislators. Use the power of your wallet and don't patronize businesses that you don't like, for whatever reason. Don't feel compelled by this law to have a relationship with someone of the same gender, if you believe that's wrong. If you believe strongly in your all-powerful deity of choice, I assume you also believe with all of your heart that there is some terrible judgement your god will dole out. It would seem this should be more than enough — eternal suffering. Sounds perfectly awful. I'll never understand why religious people shouldn't feel adequately relieved by that and can therefore busy themselves following the rest of what I've heard about religion, which includes the "love thy neighbor/judge not" stuff. No need to bother warning us about our fate. We've heard all about it, and doing it here is the very definition of "trolling". Use that saved energy to make things better for those in need and promote love and justice. Really — consider doing only that. Or don't. Personally, it's incredibly heartwarming to see that the overwhelmingly vast majority of us came to this blog page purely to celebrate a landmark decision that forwards the cause of equal justice and to find the recipe for a ruffled purple cake.

Christina T. June 28, 2015
I'm always amazed that people dredge up the "separation of church and state" argument. Will you bet your next paycheck that the phrase "separation of church and state" appears in the Constitution?

Mike V. June 29, 2015
That's how the following is interpreted - "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion"
We're not a theocracy. Want to live in one? Go move to the middle east, they think just like some of the so-called "Christians" here in this great country.

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015
"We live in a democracy, and in this democracy, "

We are not and never have been a democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic, just as the Founders envisioned. The difference is that in a Republic the Government is supposed to follow the Law, while in a democracy, the Government does whatever the majority wants it to do.

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015
Sorry, but that is not what you think it means. The Government is not to establish an official state religion as in England, France or Germany did at the time of the Founders. No one ever proposed that God be eliminated from the Public Square.

KevCountry June 27, 2015
And let's just let God do the judging. She knows what she's doing...

Beverly L. June 27, 2015
Not judging, I've just read God's Word & have never seen anything about same sex marriage being of God!!!

Mike V. June 29, 2015
Which God? Who says your God is the only one?

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015

Thank you for supporting same-sex marriage. I'm the son of a baptist preacher-man and I have a lot of those "haters in the name of Christ" in my family. I am a big foodie and will support you and your stand for equality and excellence. My husband John and I are grateful with the ruling. Now we can travel to all 50 states and have our rights as a married couple recognized! I never thought it would happen in my lifetime.

You know what guys and gals. For your information the Bible is not about hate of any kind. Whom ever says it is,is a fool. What's in the bible is truth. And the truth is God doesn't condone same sex marrage. Enough said.

Suzanne O. June 26, 2015
I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure God has not made any explicit statements about "same-sex marriage" in the Bible or elsewhere... There are passages in the Bible that condemn sodomy, but there are also passages that condemn wearing fabrics that mix different plant fibers or that seem to call for rather brutal punishments for various crimes. Believers use their own judgment as to which of these statements they abide by, so the question is not simply whether the Bible is "true" or not (a question that people of other faiths or atheists are not particularly engaged by, nor do they need to be in a country founded on the principle of separation of church and state) but also on what basis do believers decide which statements in the Bible they adhere to and which they need not abide by. To the extent that human judgment (which I assume you would concede IS fallible) is involved, it's less a question of "God's truth" than of humans' (believers') choices. And I also just have to toss out here a question: if Jesus were to appear in the US today, how much time and energy would he devote to opposing gay marriage versus addressing problems like children going hungry, people who are sick or elderly left uncared for, the highest rates of violence in the advanced, industrialized world, etc.? My sense is not very much...

Lauren W. June 26, 2015
So well said!

Debbie S. June 27, 2015
FYI... the bible explicitly says that for a man to lie with another man, or woman with a woman is not on. How does that allow for same sex anything?

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
"I may be mistaken" That is probably the only true statement in your post.
Polyester? Shellfish? Really? Those Old Testament dietary and other laws were for Old Testament Jews. New Testament Believers are under no obligation to follow those laws.

KevCountry June 27, 2015
How do you know she doesn't condone same-sex marriage. It's obvious you haven't spoken to her lately.

Herschelian June 27, 2015
The Bible - God Bless It - was written by various chaps over a long period several thousand years ago. It covers the history of the Jews and the accepted norms of the times it was written in. Although interesting, it has little relevance to how we live our lives in the modern world. I am a 60+ woman happily married for 40 years to a wonderful husband and I am DELIGHTED that at last same-sex marriages are legal and provide the same rights and protections that I enjoy - this is a civilized and intelligent ruling!

Beverly L. June 27, 2015
His words do talk against all of these things & He talks about marriage between a man & a woman!!! I don't judge any of you & have several gay friends whom I love but I'll never pretend it's of God or in the Bible & you shouldn't either!!!!!

Beverly L. June 27, 2015
Thank you! Very well put!

kris June 28, 2015
I don't believe in god, christianity, or the bible ( a collection of morality tales written long after the fact). You're not in charge of other individuals, so stop trampling on my personal rights

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015
Why are you delighted?

Joyce S. June 26, 2015
Here is to supporting all committed relationships. Cake all around is a perfect way to celebrate this happy day!

scoot87501 June 26, 2015
Hey dumb bell Cooks R Us should we now discuss the incredibly high divorce rate among hetero married couples. It seems they make terrible parents, wives and husbands!

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Pity you're only concerned that homosexuals are not denied wedding, birthday or cupcake, but are not concerned that homosexuals are executed in Islamic countries by the mullahs there, eh? Christians are only preaching Christ Crucified to sinners, but others are killing homosexuals, stoning women to death, genitally mutilating girls and selling them into sexual slavery and Christian pastors are imprisoned or worse in Islamic countries.
These are the people that Obama is cozying up with and giving nuclear technology to.

Cooks R. June 27, 2015
scoot, the subject is gay marriage and not hetero divorce. I do agree with you that those who suffer the most from divorce are generally woman and children. So people are now dumbbells when they don't agree with your - how small and pathetic you are. I happen to believe that one's plumbing should determine what their sexual orientation is, not some psycho/social deviation. The idea of two men or two women being married is as laughable to me as believing that after all his efforts to change his sexual identity, Bruce Jenner is still a man. In fact ole Bruce seems to want it both ways (no pun intended). He has spent a fortune on chiseling everything but the last body part that defines his manhood. These people need mental healthcare, not marriage licenses.

Beverly L. June 27, 2015
Amen!!!!

Lauren W. June 26, 2015
Too hot to bake today, but as others asked, purple cake, please.

And buh-bye to the bigots using their god and bible to promote hatred!

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Sorry, but this was meant for you:
Pity you're only concerned that homosexuals are not denied wedding, birthday or cupcake, but are not concerned that homosexuals are executed in Islamic countries by the mullahs there, eh? Christians are only preaching Christ Crucified to sinners, but others are killing homosexuals, stoning women to death, genitally mutilating girls and selling them into sexual slavery and Christian pastors are imprisoned or worse in Islamic countries.
These are the people that Obama is cozying up with and giving nuclear technology to.

Beverly L. June 27, 2015
It's not hatred, it's not in Gods word!!!

Billie L. June 26, 2015
Oh Yeah, by the way, where is that purple cake???? Is there a purple cake!!

Dena June 26, 2015
I come here frequently for recipes but have never felt the need to log in. But today I'm overjoyed and thank you FOOD52 for celebrating a historical day. "The most sacred of the duties of a goverment is to do equal and impartial justice to all citizens" - Thomas Jefferson

Deb W. June 26, 2015
Here's to love and dessert for everyone. Thank you Food 52 for acknowledging the joy of sharing, and let the weddings begin!

Billie L. June 26, 2015
I am filled with pride that so many people, such as you, are over joyed that this has finally come to pass. It is a wonderful day indeed. All humans deserve to be loved and to love those they choose!! I knew I loved you guys for a reason!!!

Bill M. June 26, 2015
Thanks Billie - that means a lot to me an so many others.

Billie L. June 26, 2015
You are so welcome, this is very close to my heart!

Bill M. June 26, 2015
Most of my cooking comes from Food 52. They do an awesome job.

gardeningal June 26, 2015
Thank you for all of your recipes, articles and informative reads!
I love your site.
...But where is that purple frosted cake recipe?

breadwhisperer June 26, 2015
To the disgruntled commenters threatening to take their "business" elsewhere: Food52 sells a $100 Polenta Serving Board. I hardly think you are their target demographic! :) #lovewins

Toddie June 26, 2015
WOW I'm even more in love with this site knowing that you support love and equality. I want to thank you for your bravery but it makes me sad that bravery is required to demonstrate love and support to your fellow human beings. Hatred and intolerance in the name of your God is not what Jesus would do.

C. U. June 27, 2015
I have deleted you because of your sponship of this

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
That is not what Christ taught. What you are describing is what goes on in Islamic countries.

Wendy W. June 26, 2015
WE ALL WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FANCY PURPLE CAKE! Except, possibly, for the homophobes who are fleeing the site.

BrooklynBridget June 26, 2015
We're trying to track down he purple cake! We don't want to upset our readers!! ;-)

Jan June 26, 2015
Love the cake in my email but where is it? The purple/lavender ribbon icing is beautiful.
I agree that love & marriage is between two people.

tamater S. June 26, 2015
Is there so much love in this world that any of it should be pooh-pooed?
I heard a good solution for anyone who has a problem with gay marriage - don't marry anyone of your own sex. Hey, that's easy!

Bill M. June 26, 2015
I share your website with my friends on Facebook all the time. I will now share that you support equality and love and that inspires greatness in all people. Let's eat cake! And I want to know about the purple cake in the email please. :)

Austin B. June 26, 2015
Hear, hear. What's the purple cake?

Kathy June 26, 2015
Celebrating this historic day with cake in Wyoming! All the mean, self-righteous, nasty commenters may go eat dirt today. Just leaves more cake for us!!!

Mark H. June 26, 2015
I'm from Massachusetts and reading some of these strange "I'm leaving food52" because of liking something that congress passed is pretty small minded. Like anything on the Internet, if you don't like it just move on. You don't have a relationship with food52 (although sometimes I feel like I do). If I see a recipe featured on broccoli I don't unsubscribe because I'm allergic. I simply move on. By the way food52 won't miss you. Neither will I. - The Purple Fig

Stephanie J. June 26, 2015
Well said, Mark. I never post on blogs, but felt it necessary today because of all the hate I was reading. Once again, cheers to FOOD52 for voicing their opinion...regardless of the mixed reviews it has caused. My relationship with your blog is stronger than ever.

Frako K. June 27, 2015
And what's up with all these people saying that they're leaving, and they're still posting and amen-ing.

Breadgirl June 26, 2015
Hey, I watch Fox News, and am totally for gay marriage, and applaud Food52 for celebrating! Food52 is the best food blog out there and they are welcome to post whatever they want on the blog you read for free. Yay for gay marriage, love, Food52 and cake!

Wendy W. June 26, 2015
People offering accommodations and services to the public are doing . . . just that. Just as the law in this country is clear that the baker -- regardless of personal scruple -- has to bake a cake for the interracial marriage, or for the Muslim couple, so too should it be for the same-sex couple. It's a clear Commerce Clause issue. And if a baker refuses, he can be sued. Similarly, if that baker refuses, I want to know about it, so that I can withhold my patronage, write a letter to the editor, send an angry tweet, or even stage a protest. I doubt that Food 52, which is a corporation, has a belief -- despite Citizens United.

Rainbird June 26, 2015
And where does religious freedom figure into your comment? No baker, or photographer, or ANY business should be FORCED into any business relationship that goes AGAINST their religious beliefs.

Rainbird June 26, 2015
And it is NOT a 'clear commerce clause "issue. Geez. get a law degree.

Dena June 26, 2015
The baker who is losing business by not serving a large segment of people is wondering how he can be more profitable and still violate the civil rights and discrimate against a group of Americans? I just got sweaty palms typing that....it took me back 200 years. That does NOT fall into the description of religious freedom unless his bakery is registered as a religious institution. I wager the poor baker has sold a cookie before asking his patrons their sexual preferences.

Rainbird June 26, 2015
"Large segment of people?" Less than 0.1 percent of people. PLEASE get your facts straight!

Dena June 26, 2015
The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, a sexual orientation law and public policy think tank, estimate over 5 million Americans identify as gay. I'm off to eat cake!

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Umm, that comes to 0.015%. Still a very insignificant number.

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Why not go to a bakery that wants to bake your 'wedding' cake, eh?
Are there not bakers that cater to the 0.015% of the population?

Dena June 27, 2015
It's actually 2% but your point it that its okay to oppress another group if they're small and you're part of a larger one? How unconscience must one be to refuse service to American citizens for not passing your moral litmus test then complain about going bankrupt? Rainbirds bakery lost her lawsuit recently in Colorado after refusing to serve a gay couple. She left Colorado and must be packing now for....where? China?

rockribbedrushy July 1, 2015
We'll see how you feel when the State compels churches to perform these "marriages" against their faith, eh?

Donna M. June 26, 2015
Maybe the baker should just start baking cakes!!! It's too bad the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, The United Kingdom, South Africa, and a dozen other countries beat us too it! A great day nonetheless. I'm almost done frosting a beautiful rainbow layer cake for tonight.

Sharon C. June 26, 2015
I signed up because of your celebration of something historical that happened today and yes, there will always be those that disagree but I am not one of them. People should be allowed to be with whoever they choose to be. And it's also opening up a whole new economic market for attorneys! Divorce between same sex couples.

Cooks R. June 26, 2015
I know a gay couple, unmarried, but two women who have two sperm donated children. They are about as capable of raising a child as some monkey in a zoo, but they had the money to do all of the sperm buying, in vitro, etc. The children are 4 and 2 years old and already showing signs of being completely out of control and socially maladjusted. Children need the influence of a mother and a father, not some sperm donor paying his way through college as the one referred to above. Two mothers and two fathers is completely unnatural and anyone who believes that this is sustainable needs only to look at the American ghetto to see where the lack of cohesive families and the absence of fathers has gotten us.

Scott B. June 26, 2015
You are completely unhinged. But nice post illustrating not only homophobia but racism as well! Nicely played...

Alan June 27, 2015
Not sure I see your point. There are a lot of out-of-control, socially maladjusted children in the world. They are surely not all the children of wealthy gay couples (in fact, none of the ones I personally know are). I think you suffer from confirmation bias.

Cooks R. June 27, 2015
Oh Scott, now instead of eating rainbow cakes and whatever else you like "to eat", you are playing the race card. I don't know what alternate universe you live in, but if you honestly think that pointing out a known fact about the black community's lack of cohesive families, high rates of illegitimate births and the absence of a man in the household is racism, then you are living under a rock. I suppose being opposed to beheadings also makes me a racist/islamophobe.

Scott B. June 27, 2015
You're a racist. Plain and simple. You didn't allude to 'black' in your prior post but hey - called out and BOOM there it is. "pointing out a fact about the black community'. Such an authority. But listen, 98% of the posts here support what food52 did by supporting marriage equality. I know being in the 2% camp has to be galling but go to nationformarriage.org and stare at it for the rest of the day.

Cooks R. June 26, 2015
I would like to know if Food 52 believes that it is okay to bankrupt a baker whose religious convictions prohibits him/her to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple, or whether a land owner in upstate New York has the right to say they don't do gay weddings on their property because of religious conviction. Do you even have the courage to make a comment let alone understand how religious liberty and the right of free association and religious conviction is being circumvented by this decision or are you still throwing a little flour and sugar on a board and hoping this argument goes away?

Rainbird June 26, 2015
We moved out of Colorado for these very facts (Masterpiece Cake Shop) . It is a very sick society that allows for a state to restrict religious freedom. We vote 'with our feet." And our dollars.

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
They most likely do not believe in religious freedom as written by our Founding Fathers in the First Amendment.

Maryann June 26, 2015
Everyone should be able to follow his/her own heart. If you don't agree with the decision that's your choice. Personally, I feel this world has bigger problems to worry about than which two people are vowing to love each other for ever.

Brenda S. June 26, 2015
Found it! Good bye!

tamater S. June 26, 2015
Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

Rainbird June 26, 2015
Oh yeah. And our $$$$ go with us.

Brenda S. June 26, 2015
I do not want to receive emails from this site any longer!

Brenda S. June 26, 2015
How do I remove myself from your site?

Stephanie J. June 26, 2015
Later Brenda!

Chocolate B. June 26, 2015
Yay! Love conquers all. Congrats to all of us in the United States and to Food52 for posting this celebratory column. What a joy-filled day!

tamater S. June 26, 2015
I'm so proud of Food 52 today!

Rainbird June 26, 2015
I certainly wouldn't be celebrating the SCOTUS decision. If this is what you celebrate, I'll leave you to it. You just ruined a marvelous site with politics. Sad.

NotTooSweet June 26, 2015
So happy for my daughter and her partner and all the other people in our country who were granted equal rights today. Very proud day to be an American and I applaud Food52 for celebrating this momentous decision. For those who are disappointed or downright angry, please know that I understand - we have felt that way for a very long time. That is why today is such a cause for celebration.

Cathy S. June 26, 2015
Well said!

Kate A. June 26, 2015
Aw!! Love you mom!! Definitely a day for celebration.

Kate A. June 26, 2015
Also you are more than welcome to make any of these cakes for our wedding!!

Austin B. June 26, 2015
What's the purply-looking cake on the email?

breadwhisperer June 26, 2015
Yay SCOTUS and yay Food52!

Stephanie J. June 26, 2015
FOOD52...good for you. Sorry to hear all the small-mindedness regarding this subject. This should really be a non-issue. I will celebrate (gleefully) with you!

Veronica E. June 26, 2015
How about a cake shaped like a hand basket?

dbarnhart June 26, 2015
@Christy It's 'Whether' not 'Weather' unless your really talking about how hot it is today. Your ignorance is showing. Same goes for KimmyV.

Gaby B. June 26, 2015
@dbarnhart, it's also 'you're' not 'your'.

Your ignorance is showing!

Cynthia P. June 26, 2015
@Gaby Bright, simmer down, dbarnhart is actually correct. "Your" is possessive, "you're" is a contraction of "you are".

Gaby B. June 26, 2015
Yep, you're right Cynthia, as was I!
@dbarnhart said "... unless your (you are) really talking ..." so should have used you're.

If someone is going to criticise spelling and grammar they should get it right themselves.

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
That's because they do not teach Reading, Writing or Arithmetic anymore.

Patty H. June 26, 2015
It's nearly 100 degrees in McMinnville, Oregon today, so I'll make rainbow ice cream, instead. Love wins, equality wins and dessert wins!

Simon S. June 26, 2015
I'll see your 100 degrees and raise you 98% humidity (Florida). Here's to cooler weather and great cake with that rainbow ice cream!

BrooklynBridget June 26, 2015
Yay! love cake AND equal rights!

scoot87501 June 26, 2015
Robert in Santa Fe
Finally one group waving a book no longer controls the lives of others. They do not decide what is moral and what is not for the rest of the world. It is time to celebrate freedom from the followers of these religions that have killed millions of people in the name of their book. It is definitely time to eat cake!!!!

Beverly L. June 26, 2015
That Book is The Book we are suppose to live by - inspired by God & written by God's desciples!!

scoot87501 June 26, 2015
Awwww, the great myth book over which millions have been slaughtered.

scoot87501 June 26, 2015
Beverly keep your book to yourself and stop trying to control others with it.

Scott B. June 26, 2015
Oh Beverly, you can't even spell disciples correctly! And another thing, all of us in this country do not adhere to your definition of "we". Look at it this way, since Massachusetts legalized same sex marriage eleven years ago, the Red Sox have won THREE world series!!

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
You mean the koran?

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
I know there's a joke in there somewhere.

Christy June 26, 2015
I am also disappointed to see this type of content here, I have enjoyed your site and the content up to this point. As a consumer, I will be stepping back and re-evaluating weather I continue my patronage or look elsewhere because of it.

Scott B. June 26, 2015
continue to re-evaluate 'weather' - it's hot as heck out here in Oregon!

scoot87501 June 26, 2015
Yeah Scott re-evaluating weather I want to wear shoes or sandals this evening.

Christy June 26, 2015
Well it's pretty HOT here in CA as well - Ha hah!
Very funny - please excuse my typo.

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
The Grammar Geschtapo is close to throwing you to the loins for that.

KimmyV June 26, 2015
This kind of article is not what I come to food52 for. Disappointed to see it here.

Beverly L. June 26, 2015
Amen!

Nitpicker June 26, 2015
What a great day it is to wake up and hear wonderful news for a change. News about equality, not exclusion, of joy, not violence, and of love, not hate. Cake and pie....pass it around!!!

Mark June 26, 2015
Sad. Because the government makes something legal, that doesn't make it moral.
I've enjoyed Food52 and purchased items over the years, but since I now have to be subjected to their cheerleading for deviant behavior (according to the Holy Bible and the vast majority of Americans) I will direct my interest to other food sites that are about what they advertise they're about.
Please note, for future reference, that God's Word also speaks against beastiality, pedophilia, polygamy… but hey, start preparing your celebratory post now.

Simon S. June 26, 2015
Awww...it's okay, Mark! God loves us all. He even sent his "only begotten son" to tell us that. Don't worry; while most of us ARE in fact in favor of loving thy neighbor and treating others as we would like them to treat us, I'm pretty sure the whole 'sex with cows and dogs' thing isn't really on the cards for the future. Fear not.

Rainbird June 26, 2015
But He did say, "go and sin no more…."

Alan June 27, 2015
I wonder why Food52's posts about pork and shellfish haven't already driven you elsewhere? I also presume you think it's immoral to have a round haircut or tatoos, and you don't wear polyester. I get that these are Old Testament things and modern Christians don't necessarily ascribe to them, but these all come from the very same chapter of your beloved book as the "man shall not lie with man" stuff. I can't think of any reason other than fear and bigotry that you keep that one and reject all the others. The Bible is the word of God or it's not -- if you're going to pick and choose which of those words you regard as moral then sorry, but you'll have to let me do the same.

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Please get some new material dude. Those Old Testament dietary and other laws were for Old testament Jews. New Testament Believers are under no obligation to follow those laws.

Simon S. June 27, 2015
Rainbird, in the same breath Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn thee..." and he also said, in the same conversation, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." It seems some people choose to focus on only one part of a passage, and take it out of context, if it suits their immediate argument.

But love? Love is no sin. Especially when it's celebrated with cake. :)

Scott B. June 26, 2015
Thanks for posting this! Given I'm in Oregon I'm probably going to make a marionberry cobbler but it will be in the same spirit.

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Marion Berry? Wasn't he the Crack Smoking Mayor arrested by the FBI and sent to prison?

khart2255 June 26, 2015
As for me, I'll eat cake! LOVE

Donna M. June 26, 2015
Here's to love! Glorious! A big slice of rainbow cake please!

Simon S. June 26, 2015
Cake wins! Love Wins! It's a win-win! Lovers, haters, we can all agree cake is worth celebrating. So I've got three reasons to celebrate today: cake, dignity, and equality. Life is good!

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Why not got to Iran and celebrate, eh?

Simon S. June 27, 2015
Why would I do that? I'm happy with the direction our country is taking. It's probably more suited to your lifestyle to live elsewhere, if you feel your religious beliefs are being violated here. Go see what violation REALLY feels like.

inga P. June 26, 2015
Absolutely, lets celebrate; about time! I am sure god will be happy too. I am not gay by the way but am cheering for all of the couples who have waited so long for this day.

Beverly L. June 26, 2015
If you don't even capitalize God are you sure you know him?

Frako K. June 26, 2015
If you're gonna capitalize God you need to capitalize Him (or Her) too.

Cooks R. June 26, 2015
Wow, Cathey. I was wondering just how long it would take for the non-thinkers here to attack Fox. This issue has absolutely nothing to do with any news organization, be it Fox or the insane asylum otherwise known as MSNBC. The truly interesting question that thinking people should be asking is the notion that this appears to be no longer a constitutional republic. Do you dare put this decision to a nationwide referendum or allow each individual state to decide (that's is 50 states - not 57 as Potus seems to have counted)? I doubt it!

Beverly L. June 26, 2015
Amen

Alan June 27, 2015
Go read the Constitution. A nationwide referendum would be unconstitutional. The closest you'll get is for all 50 states to agree to hold individual referendums independently. On the other hand, the Supreme Court deciding a court case based on the rights enshrined in the constitution is entirely constitutional. Just because you don't like their interpretation doesn't mean we no longer live in a constitutional republic -- that's like claiming you don't have representation in Congress because you disagree with your duly elected representative.

Don't like their decision? Work toward a constitutional amendment. The Supreme Court can't overrule that. That's the closest you'll get to a nationwide referendum, I'm afraid, but it's exactly how things are supposed to work in our constitutional republic.

rockribbedrushy June 27, 2015
Where is homosexuality enshrined in the Constitution, eh?

Cooks R. June 27, 2015
Good question, rockribbedrushy. It isn't. In fact marriage is not enshrined in our Constitution. We now have an activist court who can spin legal decisions out of whole cloth. Laws governing marriage have always belonged to the states through powers granted them via the Constitution until yesterday. Not only does the Court not have the right to decide this issue, they have made a power grab from the States.

Kare June 26, 2015
Love from NOLA- thank you Food 52 for celebrating love... I choose cake!

Burf June 26, 2015
LOVE! This day has been filled with smiles, high-fives, and hugs.

Now I just need these 10 cakes.

Michael H. June 26, 2015
Yay! What a great day!

Nora T. June 26, 2015
Thanks for politicizing food, one of the few topics---aside from bakeries and pizza parlors---that is simply for entertainment and pleasure. But *love is love*, right? So will you share recipes for celebrating human/dog marriages? I mean 'coz the malleable-minded among us are all about unicorns and *love is love"...right? Ick. Thanks for polluting one of the few topics that people on both sides of the issue could enjoy.

Scott B. June 26, 2015
You're offensive. I've been with my partner for 23 years. Comparing that to unicorns and dogs is beyond the pale. You can disagree but your comment shows how full of ignorance you are. In the meantime, Imma bake me a cake!!

Beverly L. June 26, 2015
I think you are the ignorant one!

Danielle June 26, 2015
I totally understand how you can confuse two consenting adults with animals.

Thank you Food52! I'm celebrating with you!

Alan June 27, 2015
If you think food is apolitical you have some reading to do. And if you can't tell the difference between humans and animals you need to go back to preschool.

Cooks R. June 27, 2015
Scott, thanks for opening your 23 year old closet door. I knew your rancor had to have a deeper meaning than some fairy purple cake or colors of a rainbow - lol

Cathy S. June 26, 2015
I am delighted to share this great news today with anyone, anywhere. The haters and moaners should pack up and head to Fox News.

Beverly L. June 26, 2015
I'm headed that way, thank you God for Fox News!

Cathy S. June 26, 2015
Don't let the door hit you in the proverbial backside. Meanwhile, happy people are making cake!

scoot87501 June 26, 2015
That would be Faux News Bev!

Nicole P. June 26, 2015
LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Cooks R. June 26, 2015
I signed on to receive commentary on food, entertaining, kitchen products, and recipes. I have purchased numerous items through this site. I will not do so again. Politics, Supreme Court decision, cultural engineering with all of its ramifications does not belong here - it is divisive no matter on what side a reader falls. This post was a big mistake and frankly, I am considering cancelling your newsletter and making purchases through if Food 52 believes that political pandering is now the order of the day

Beverly L. June 26, 2015
It goes against everything the Bible teaches. I have many gay friends whom I love but God's word trumps everything!!!!!!!!!!!

Carol S. June 26, 2015
Well, thank goodness you don't get to force your religion on the rest of us!

Not every one of your readers thinks the Scotus ruling is a good one. Political commentary of this sort doesn't belong on a food blog.

I can't speak for the folks in charge of Food52, but I figure it's their blog, they're providing to you for free, so who cares what you think belongs and doesn't belong? Don't like it? You can choose not to read it. Go somewhere else that's more to your liking.
