I made this yesterday for our New Year's meal - served with polenta griddled in leftover bacon fat. It was SO good! I counted the scallions, cilantro and Cubanelle pepper as "greens" so we hit all the good luck components - peas, greens, pork and then the polenta as the "corn bread" :-)

Ha! That's brilliant! and with griddled polenta, that sounds like a great meal! You know, I think this could actually be really good with some very fine shreds of greens in it, too. Just an idea for next year

Thanks for linking! I loved reading your blog post. I was with you 100% as you described your Aldi experience. In the future, if your Aldi has a Latino food section, grab a can of table cream/media crema/creme de leite. It is basically evaporated heavy cream. It is a lifesaver in situations when you need heavy cream and they're all out. You recipe with butter beans sounds delicious. I may have to try that one out.

Thanks for the recipe. I have a bowl of black eye peas soaking on the counter, ready to cook with today. I may have to figure out a sub for Cubanelle pepper, and jack cheese. (Or, is the market open, I wonder?) This is the 2nd article I've read of yours, having just found the chaufa recipe a few minutes ago--I love your writing style and went looking for more!
I'm sorry that you lost your sister. But, know that she will always be with you in your heart.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate it. I hope you were able to find the ingredients....but to be perfectly honest, this is the type of recipe you can definitely play around with. I think it wold be awesome with some jalapeño or chipotle peppers or even roasted red peppers. You can use gouda, or cheddar, or edam, or mozzarella. Make it your own!

I thought everyone ate black eye peas on New Year’s Day. In the south a lot of folks also have hog jowls and greens as part of the meal. My family just can’t go there. So we make creole black eye peas to go along with what ever meat we decide to cook. The recipe I use was published in the Arkansas Democrat gazette years ago and is the only way we eat black eye peas. We really prefer purple Hull peas

Wow! seems like your New Year's Day spread has quite a story behind it! I'm curious to know about your creole black eye peas recipe. It sounds like it would be really flavorful. And I have never heard of purple hull peas. I'll have to look that one up. Thanks for your comment and for reading my article
