While the terminology has far outpaced me, this is the type of "cold plate" I've been serving my family for decades. Mine don't look quite so pretty, but are still decorative and include a balance of tastes, textures, and colors. Faves that frequently show up in addition to nuts, cheeses, and salami include sliced radishes, raw green beans, strawberries, grapes, slices of apple--anything fresh and appealing. Cold sliced leftover meats--ie that roast from the weekend, or some slices of rotisserie chicken--work, and roasted veggies with a little olive oil and vinegar can shine, too. Small portions of ordinary potato salad or deviled eggs can snuggle in with more expensive treats. While those free form plates in the article are spectacular, I spotted some terrific plastics at Walmart today for $.50 each that would plate up nicely for a patio spread where you don't really want glass or pottery.

I'm a grazer for sure. I did not know any of your favorite cheese.... then I saw you were in Brooklyn. This is Seattle here, do you know good west coast brands .

Cowgirl creamery and Marin are California cheeses. Should be available at Whole Foods in Seattle.

Beecher's Flagship Cheese is fantastic. The cows are on Vashon Island and you can see the cheese being made at Pike Place Market. Tillamook Vintage White Cheddar (aged 18 months or 2 years) is also West Coast (Oregon). Also from Oregon is Rogue River Blue which won the Annual World Cheese Awards, a first for American Cheese.

This looks wonderful and blessedly simple to make. We have been having some very hot weather lately and O in the middle of moving. Think. I might try this for my first garden brunch. Think the girls will love it. Thanks for the great idea Nancy in Oklahoma.
