About the size of a quarter coin or a bit larger , but a little thicker--it's a matter of taste how much ginger to use in a recipe anyway. If you have smaller ginger, use 2 dime sized 'coins'.

I meant 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

I'd use a "coin" of ginger, about 1/8th to 1/4th inch thick, and 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick.
