I think it really depends on how confident your friend is in the kitchen. If they are often cooking and trying new recipes, then go with the cocoa and syrup, it sounds yummier. But most people, by nature, are lazy and a bit scared of trying new things, so something that is already pre-mixed together and ready to use would be more likely to be used than something that involves a new skill they have to learn.
