Here's a recipe from Louis DGuoy; put 1c. cocoa and 2c. water in a large saucepan, cook over a low flame, stirring constantly, until thick and smooth. Stir in 2c. of sugar and 1/4tsp. salt, boil gently for 3 min. Off the fire, stir in 1 tsp. vanilla extract.
Hi Sol! I haven't tried this without chocolate syrup, but I suspect a similar quantity of cocoa powder dissolved in maple syrup would do the trick. Let me know how it goes!
