Make ahead of time?
Is this a cake I could make in advance (say, a day ahead) or does the syrup make that not a good idea.

I think the syrup won't make it too soggy after one day, but if you're worried, set it aside and drizzle over cake pieces when you serve.
I have more concerned the mascarpone finish. If you apply it when you make the cake, store it in fridge until shortly before serving.
