It's to taste. My husband's family have a thing against nutmeg and like to use white pepper in its place.

What a great idea, using white pepper - such an interesting flavor, and for most Americans, somewhat unexpected. I like the idea of using a touch of each - nutmeg and white pepper. ;o)

Just a dash. I always grind a pinch of fresh nutmeg into my chicken broth-based soups. You can't define the flavor, but it adds a wonderful warm note.
