We agree with the comments noted and offer our go-to vendor for high quality cooking herbs/spices ... https://oaktownspiceshop.com/search?q=cardamon

When using dried herbs/spices quality is everything...and Oaktown is one of the best.

POSSIBLE REASONS WHY:
True memory (emotional)
True memory (physical) as children's taste buds are more sensitive than adults'
Different recipe or faulty recipe transmission
Type of cardamom used or way it was handled
SOLUTIONS:
As Wendy suggests, buy from a store that has fresher spices in stock & more turnover
Consult with remaining family members (if you are lucky enough to have some) who might have the recipe or more suggestions
Make other recipes from your grandmother's culture or where she grew up

Make sure your cardamom is fresh. I live in a city where there is a “Little India” and I buy many spices there. They are much fresher because they sell a lot more spice than a supermarket.
