Leg of Lamb: White Wine & Chicken Stock

Recipes say white wine & chicken broth for leg of lamb. But shank recipes say red wine and beef broth. Why white & chicken for leg rather than red and beef? Would it be wrong to use red & beef?

I've seen and made lamb braise with either the white or red wine base. Use whatever you have or like better.
