When a recipe calls for Parmesan cheese which do I use the bottled kind or grate my own own?

Use whatever is available in stores near you and/or affordable. In ascending quality, they are:
• ready grated commercial brand in usually green cardboard shaker
• ready grated commercial brand in plastic bag
• ready recently grated by store or deli in plastic tub about one or two cup size
• solid cheese made domestically
• solid cheese made in Italy and imported.

PS Some online cooks (recipes and/or videos) recommend against using ready-ground cheeses, including but not limited to Parmesan.
One reason is they are often drier and not as tasty as solid cheeses.
Another reason is they are coated with cellulose that prevents clumping. This also means they melt less readily and less completely than cheese shredded at home.
So, as in the first note, choose partly by availability and cost, but also consider these other factors in your buying and cooking.
