Has anyone made this successfully in a 9 x 13 pan?

Should be ok.
Check volume of the two layer cakes and compare it to that of 8x13 rectangle. (Various baking pan charts at allrecipes, King Arthur Flour etc).
Adjust volumes of batter if needed.
And/or look at Alice Medrich article on this site about baking cakes in any size pan.

Update - I looked at one of the charts and two 9" round layer cake pans hold about 12c and the lasagna 9x13 pan holds about 15c.
So you
* may have some leftover batter to bake in a small pan;
* may want to make about 1 and 1/5 recipe to fill the rectangle pan.

Gosh, sorry for 1st starred point.
It's the opposite...the layer cake recipe will not fill the rectangle pan, so you will need to bake shorter time. Or make an aluminum foil wall in the rectangle pan to reduce its volume by about 3cuos.
