9 Summer Cocktails That Are Better Than Air Conditioning

June  4, 2015

When he's not busy running the cocktail program at New York City's Marta, Erik Lombardo is giving us the rundown on all things spirits—and showing us the best ways to drink them.

Today: We're rounding up 9 of Erik's summertime drinks to help us get through the hot season ahead.

In the summer, it can be tough to convince yourself to do much besides stand in front of an air conditioner or an open freezer. But since you're already near the freezer, you might as well grab some ice cubes. And since you're in the kitchen, get a glass and a shaker and a bottle or two. You’re minutes away from a cold cocktail. Here's to clearing the hot summer haze—these 9 cocktails will help.

Polenta, mac and cheese, farmers' market breakfasts, smoky food & drink. These are a few of my favorite things. I was an editorial intern @Food52 in 2015!

Simply Limeade, vodka, and a splash of seltzer (for low-cal bubbles), with fresh raspberries. Make it by the glass, in a pitcher, or when the Limeade container is about 1/2 empty just make it directly in the container! A small cooler for ice and you are ready for the perfect summer picnic cocktail. Seriously delicious!

Myers Rum, pineapple juice and a healthy squeeze of lime. Nothing better on a hot afternoon(after 5 of course)!

I love a basil gimlet, made with fresh squeezed lime juice muddled with fresh basil, a spot of agave syrup and Tito's vodka, shaken well and strained into a well-chilled martini glass. Garnish with a large basil leaf. For a lighter version, serve over ice and top with Topo Chico mineral water. Enjoy!
