9 Ways to Eat Well—Really Well—While Camping

August 14, 2015

Planning an end-of-the-summer, last-hurrah camping trip? Lucky you! Just remember that hunkering down in a tent doesn't mandate the roasting of hot dogs on sticks (unless, of course, you want to). Pack your bug spray, your flashlight, and your GORP—but eat well, too!

All you'll need to eat well in the woods is a cast-iron skillet, a Dutch oven, some bowls and wooden spoons, a cooler full of ice, tools for building and cooking over a fire, and a little forethought: With some pre-measuring and prepping of ingredients before you leave home, you can make the rest of the campground jealous with these 9 recipes:

When we camp, it almost always involves many miles of backpacking with at least 1000 ft of elevation gain -- usually more like to 2-3 thousand. Weight is an issue. High energy food is essential. These can also be taken on day hikes: https://food52.com/recipes/26710-no-bake-toasted-coconut-date-and-nut-bars They're simply perfect. ;o)

Ooh, good rec! I'm with you on hiking -- "a cooler full of ice" is never going to make my packing list.
