Is it REALLY only 3-4 cup of flour for the whole cake - or is this a typo???

I think that's correct; I found the recipe on a few other sites and the flour amount is the same. I think this is supposed to be a denser, very appley cake.

Me too. The headnote at Epicurious for same recipe explicitly says the cake is mostly apple.
