Is the tomato purée essential? Since it is only a teaspoon, could it be skipped ?

I'd say tomato puree is a nice to have, not a deal-breaker. It adds depth, but you can skip it and still have something lovely to eat. Hope that helps, and that you enjoy the dish if you make it!
