Substitution for rum in the cranberry sauce?

Is there a substitute for the rum that adds that edge without the alcohol?

If you don't want to use the rum because of alcohol, possibilities include
* omit altogether;
* use 1/2 volume of molasses, Golden Syrup or maple syrup (some complex sweet flavor the rum would have provided).

Other options - some brown sugar or honey. Again, the sugar origin from the rum, with some other flavor notes.
