The small moments that allow us to hit pause just for a moment to close our eyes and take a breath for some much-needed clarity and comfort. 32. Pasta: The Spirit and Craft of Italy's Greatest Food, with Recipes, Missy Robbins, $25

You no longer need to reserve a yurt to enjoy Missy Robbins’ mafaldine with pink peppercorns and parmigiano or her cacio e pepe frittelle. The owner and chef of Lilia and Misi—two ridiculously popular restaurants in Brooklyn—published her very first cookbook in 2021 and it’s a beaut. The first 140 pages of the book (no not 14. Yes, 140) are dedicated solely to the art of pasta making—how to make the dough, roll the dough, and form it into every different shape. Then beginning on page 141, you’ll get into recipes for Italian-American staples, regional classics, and Robbins’ most viral dishes.

My favourite cookbook this year is Jason Schreiber’s Fruit Cake: recipes for the curious baker. Perhaps the title makes people think it is only a collection of fruitcake recipes and that is why it hasn’t made the “best of” lists.
There are some fruitcake type cakes included but also coffee cakes, Bundt cakes, cupcakes,muffins, cookies…all using fruit in some form. I have made several recipes and have enjoyed all of them.
Jason’s writing style is chatty, funny, friendly and precise.
His illustrations are also beautiful and actually look like the finished bake from the home kitchen.

Thank you for the recommendations! I can’t wait to check these out! I’m looking forward to Amy Thielen’s new cookbook. Her New Midwestern Table got me through a few months in 2020. I was hoping to see that title on this list, but I don’t think the details have yet been released.
