Among the ten houses in my neighborhood in Lafayette, Louisiana, there was only one other child besides my sister and me. Every Halloween, we improvised our route by invading larger neighborhoods that wouldn’t notice two extra princesses grabbing extra Crunch bars. Trick or treat, right?
Over time, our neighborhood expanded (it’s 17 houses now!) and included younger couples with kids. Rather than hosting the shortest trick-or-treat route, ever, the neighborhood turned Halloween into a block party. Sure, there was candy, but my favorite bites were creamy hummus and spinach dips, spicy pumpkin seeds, and salty pigs-in-a-blanket (that looked like mummies, of course). It was a time to catch up, connect, and show off cute kids.
